The song is about a dream. Dreaming is, of course, what sometimes happens when you fall asleep at night. You go to bed, close your eyes, fall asleep, and then enter into this dream; this dreamworld. Dreams by their very nature play by different rules than this world. Ideas of time are different.
Tears for Fears original sounds both powerful and sophisticated. It has that parallel-fourths background synth part that elevates the song to hext level. But Disturbed version is, again, just the powerchords on distorted guitar. There are good rock covers of pop songs, of course ("Sweet Dreams" by Marilyn Manson comes to mind).
