Firstly, they got really fucking big/mainstream, and any time that happens, you get a small but noisy group of haters. Secondly, they got a bit softer or, as someone else put it, safer. Their first album was a fucking facemelter, but they changed a bit after thatwhich pissed off a lot of the original fans.Disturbed "The Sound Of Silence" Fifty years after Simon & Garfunkel's iconic song topped the Hot 100 for two weeks (beginning Jan. 1, 1966), Disturbed's cover enters at No. 88. The song is about a dream. Dreaming is, of course, what sometimes happens when you fall asleep at night. You go to bed, close your eyes, fall asleep, and then enter into this dream; this dreamworld. Dreams by their very nature play by different rules than this world. Ideas of time are different.Tears for Fears original sounds both powerful and sophisticated. It has that parallel-fourths background synth part that elevates the song to hext level. But Disturbed version is, again, just the powerchords on distorted guitar. There are good rock covers of pop songs, of course ("Sweet Dreams" by Marilyn Manson comes to mind).

The disturbed cover of sound of silence is horrific. It's so corny, I can't take it. I recognize the technical skill, but the artistry is godawful. A tactless, gaudy forced epic that tries to tell me how to feel with painfully obvious timpani swells and "cinematic" orchestration. And then there's the overwhelming machismo of the vocal delivery.
On March 29th, the heavy metal band Disturbed performed a live cover of "The Sound of Silence" during an appearance on the late night talk show Conan (shown below). Within two weeks of being uploaded to YouTube, a recording of the performance gathered upwards of 2.02 million views and 4,00 comments. Billboard Hot Rock ChartSARUQ.
